1978 Pittsburgh show to be released

Very likely not an Ann & Nancy approved release, but legal somewhere, otherwise this would not hit the shelves next week. There is a reason this is not listed on Amazon.com. Actually if we have to believe Amazon.co.uk the same show is released on 2 separate labels within one week! Though the track lists aren’t the same. This music has been on international iTunes for quite a while now.

Not only did the Wilson sisters lead the band, they wrote the songs and played the instruments too, making them the first women in rock to do so. AmazonHaving achieved worldwide sales in excess of 30 million albums, and scoring 20 top ten singles and seven albums, Heart were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. This superb live broadcast was made right at the height of Hearts most successful period, in late 1978. The concert took place at Pittsburgh’s prestigious Civic Arena, a venue that could accommodate about 16,000 fans for concert performances. Initially there was group called The Army, based near Seattle in the north-west of the USA, which by 1971 featured bassist Steve Fossen and vocalist/guitarist Ann Wilson in its line-up. The Army eventually mutated into Heart, when Anns sister Nancy joined the band in 1974. In addition to singing, both Wilson sisters were multi-talented performers contributing guitar, keyboards, violin, mandolin, harmonica and autoharp amongst a plethora of instruments. By the time their first album, Dreamboat Annie, was released in 1976 the bands membership had solidified to include Roger Fisher on lead guitar, Howard Leese (another multi-instrumentalist) and drummer Michael DeRosier. The platinum-selling album was a triumph and spawned no less than three hit singles, Crazy On You, Magic Man and the title track. Unusually, Hearts second album was released twice! In 1977, they broke their recording contract with Mushroom and signed to Portrait Records. Consequently Mushroom cobbled together and released an album of unfinished studio recordings and live tracks, entitled Magazine. Heart promptly took them to court and the album was replaced the following year by one containing proper finished recordings. In the meantime their new label, Portrait, released the bands Little Queen album. It was another million-seller and included the bands best-known song, the single Barracuda which became a number 11 hit in 1977. Love Alive and Kick It Out are also featured herein. The new version of the Magazine album, released in 1978, was yet another major hit, reaching number 17 on the Billboard charts; three of the albums strongest cuts, the title track, Devil Delight and Heartless are included in this broadcast. Later the same year came an even bigger hit, the double-platinum selling Dog and Butterfly. There were two singles, the title track and Straight On; both are included in this performance, together with album highlights High Time and Mistral Wind. Finally, acknowledging their debt to Led Zeppelin, is a version of that bands hard-driving classic Rock ‘n’ Roll. After many twists and turns over subsequent years, the line-up featured on this recording reunited on 18th April 2013 to perform versions of Crazy On You and Barracuda at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. 14 tracks/ 1CD: 1. High Time 2. Heartless 3. Devil Delight 4. Straight On 5. Magic Man 6. Love Alive 7. Magazine 8. Mistral Wind 9. Dog and Butterfly. 10. Crazy on You 11. Kick It Out 12. Barracuda 13. White Lightning and Wine 14. Rock And Roll.

  1. It looks like the “High Times and Other Delights” is a shortened version of the “Live in Pittsburgh” 2 disk set. 18 tracks vs. 14. Just ordered Live in Pittsburgh and will post a review of the quality after I get it.

  2. I received the Live from Pittsburgh CD and it’s really good. The performance is outstanding, and the sound quality is above average (it sounds like a good quality bootleg; good base and pretty good treble, definitely something you can crank and enjoy). It’s a 2 disk set in professional packaging, but little to know liner notes.

Given that the two “new” live CDs appear to be from the same concert, I’d avoid the abbreviated “High Times” CD and go for the Pittsburgh one.

  3. Saw Heart in Pittsburgh Oct 31st 1987 Saturday night. Seeing Heart in the 1980s was the best thing about that great decade
